Last year, Beneath Ceaseless Skies published my story “Sinking Among Lilies” in Issue #92. Recently, the 2012 Locus Recommended Reading List came out, with this story included! Since the rights have reverted to me, I thought this was a good time to experiment with the process of formatting and publishing something on my own at Smashwords.
A traveling mercenary, moonlighting as a bookseller, arrives in a village stalked by a supernatural threat… but the occupants don’t want her help, and they refuse to tell her what is stealing their children.
Read the rest, or first check out some reviews:
“A dark twist on the aphorism that knowledge is power, for good or ill. A nicely-woven web of betrayal.” – Locus Online
““Sinking Among Lilies” goes beyond its own fantasy trappings, however, to present an interesting moral dilemma: that power, given with all good intentions, can all too often make monsters of those who might otherwise be victims… “Sinking Among Lilies” presents a tale that is not only rich in texture, but intriguing as well…” – Tangent Online
“This brutal examination of exploitation and the obligation to become involved in the muck of life and cherish the scars that that can cause is one of the better stories I’ve come across lately.” – Swords & Sorcery: A Blog
“I actually finished reading this one.” – my mom
If you have an e-reader and you nab a copy, please let me know if there’s anything about the formatting that made you want to punch me (and what platform you’re using to read). I’m new at this, and eager to learn how to do it right.
